Hi everyone I am Evelyn, musical theater performer, black belt, archery competitor/hunter and proud Texan. I am 11 years old, in the 5th grade and really lucky to get to be a homeschooler because it lets me do all the fun things I enjoy. I started hunting with my dad when I was six and fell in love with it and being out in the Texas Hill Country. I have been able to hunt with my mom’s crossbow, my dad’s AR-15 and recently with my compound bow. In April 2024 my parents got me a compound bow; I then began shooting 3D tournaments and got bit by the competition bug. By December I had become a shop shooter at Axis Archery of Paige, Tx and they have become like family to me. In January 2025 I started shooting indoor SYWAT competitions as well. I have won buckles, medals and money but having fun shooting is what’s most important. There is something special about the archery community. We get to see our friends and meet new ones all year long. We cheer each other on at tournaments and congratulate each other on a good hunt. Whether we are at deer camp, special hunting trips, out on the course or indoor trying for that 300 we are always having fun and making memories. I look forward to making those memories for a long time with my friends. We have high goals to grow up and shoot as part of the Texas A&M archery team. Hopefully that dream comes true and I can shoot while I study to become a veterinarian. The future is bright!
Hunting with KuduPoint
I really am the luckiest of girls because for my birthday when I turned 10 my parents got me a goat hunt at M4 Ranch/Axis Archery in Paige, TX. I got to spend the whole weekend at the ranch hunting and they even celebrated my birthday with cake and steak, my favorite. Not only was I getting to hunt but Blake McPhaul built me special arrows for the hunt with Kudu Broadheads. These broadheads were a perfect pairing with my bow, because of the lower poundage I was less likely to get a pass through. So when the animal runs the broadhead would inflict maximum damage internally.
We spent the first day scouting for the perfect goat for me and settled on a beautiful painted desert ram with deep, full curls. Blake, my dad and I made a few stalks that evening on this awesome ram but we didn’t have any luck. The ram was very smart, almost like he was a step ahead of us. We bedded them that evening and started to make a plan for the following morning. When we got back to camp we celebrated my birthday with good laughs and great hunting stories, then turned in for the night. The next morning we were up before the sun and ready to get back on my Ram. We drove around glassing for a while before spotting the group again. We made our plans and made the stalk, and my ram gave me the perfect shot opportunity at just 15 yards. I drew my bow, settled my pin and squeezed the trigger on my thumb release. The kudu broadhead found its mark right behind the shoulder. The ram took off and ran about 50 yards right into a pond. I had to use a fishing rod to hook him and bring him back to the bank of the pond. It was the most amazing feeling to take an animal with my bow.
Preferred broadhead: Contour+Plus 125gn (right bevel)
